Does the antidepressent Celexa (citalopram) interfere with running or other athletic/cardiovasuclar activity? I am a fairly serious long distance runner (marathons and 1/2 marathons), but since starting celexa my legs feel heavy and, in training, I'm not running the times I used to. Does the drug have any known side effects that could hinder running performance?

Canadian Snow Bunny replied: "No infact most doctors encourage you to get active as there is proof in studies that exercising, gettting outdoors decreases your depression/anxiety. edit--I went on Celexa after I lost my son, it *numbed* me and I couldn't feel anything mind or body so perhaps you're on too strong of a dose, or need to switch to another kind. I was on the lowest dose of Celexa and it still messed me up--I hated it. Doctors will tell you it's safe but I don't believe they are--there's a lot of side effects and altho I never found mine or yours on their list, there has to be some sort of connection."

Gard23 replied: "Yes, it can. The side-effects sheet mentions muscle weakness - "Musculoskeletal System Disorders - Infrequent: arthritis, muscle weakness"."

Antidepressent citalopram and jaw clenching????? i am currently taking citalopram and the only side effect i seem to be having is a sore jaw, i find myself clenching it really hard withoug knowing it, it really aches and feel a little tight, anyone else get that?

Diana H replied: "I have gotten all kinds of reactions from meds. You should contact your doctor and he/she can give you something to stop that clenching. You will feel a lot better once you are taking that with the citalopram."

lokura05 replied: "I actually have seen that quite a bit with antidepressants, see a dentist to place a night guard on you or change the meds, hope this helps."

Gard23 replied: "The SSRIs e.g. citalopram are associated with various movement disorders including jaw clenching and teeth grinding. Some people have gone to their dentist, who has had a look in their mouth and asked 'Are you on an SSRI antidepressant?' It's a side-effect to speak to your doctor about - lots of healthy volunteers experienced it in the trials, so hopefully you'll not be told it's anxiety. "It can be noted at this point, that company healthy volunteer work on the SSRI drugs demonstrates a consistent 50% rate of jaw dystonias and dyskinesias during early weeks of exposure..." Healy "SSRIs and Withdrawal/Dependence" Briefing paper June 2003. (link below) Any google search on terms like: Celexa (or citalopram) sore jaw help; citalopram jaw clenching; celexa grinding teeth help; bruxism SSRIs; citalopram jaw pain etc should bring up reading matter/others' experiences. The info leaflet that came withe medicine should contain advise on what to do if a patient experiences muscle stiffness or twitching."
